Oil Boiler Maintenance

Doing regular maintenance on your oil burner is important in order to avoid an expensive bill 
from a contractor.


How to Clean and Troubleshoot an Oil Burner


Check the color of the smoke from your chimney. If you see black smoke you might very well have a problem.


Turn off oil all lines and shut off the boiler before you begin maintenance.
Change your oil filter on a regular basis. Dirt and water will keep the fuel from burning properly. The oil filter catches these impurities.


If it clogs up then your boiler’s efficiency will decline. You should check your boiler’s manual to know how to change the filter for your particular boiler.


Put some lubricate on the burner motor and clean out any dust and grime regularly. Dirt buildup causes the motor to wear down and will shorten its life. Vacuum up any loose dust. Wipe grease and dirty oil away with a rag. Degrease the motor with a lubricant. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended lubricant.


Inspect your unit for any leaks around the burner mounting plate. If you notice any black streaks this can be a sign that smoke from the burner is escaping into the room and air. This can disrupt the proper combustion mixture in the burner. See if you can tighten the plate yourself otherwise, call a contractor to make repairs.


Check the boiler’s electrical system on a regular basis and see if there are any tripped breakers or reset buttons, this could indicate an electrical problem. Replace frayed or worn wiring after shutting off the power to the circuit.


If there any damaged pipes you will need to replace them. Seal any pipe connections that are bad with special tape rated for exhaust ducts.


Clean your draft regulator thoroughly and frequently. This hinged plate regulates the rate the exhaust is drawn into the chimney or flue. Collect dust with a vacuum, then wipe the whole draft regulator clean of grease and oil with a rag.



Clean up around the boiler otherwise dust and dirt from the room will get into the boiler. Keep the room as clean as possible to reduce the need for more intensive cleaning.

Boiler Tube Cleaning Equipment

Now in its third generation as the SAM-3, it is the world's most popular system for cleaning firetube boilers.


The  boiler tube cleaning system is compact, portable and easy to use.




One operator can thoroughly clean a tube in a fraction of the time required by other cleaning methods - all by flipping a switch. 


The SAM-3 boiler tube cleaning system uses a cleaning tool mounted to the tip of a 26' spring steel tape.




A switch controls tape feed. The operator inserts the nozzle into the tube and pushes the switch forward.




The cleaning tool travels the full distance of the boiler tube at more than 3' per second, loosening soot and scale inside the boiler tube.




The operator pulls the switch back for cleaning tool return and moves to the next boiler tube. A GTC-540 Soot-Vac vacuum, connected to the boiler tube through the SAM-3, simultaneous removes loosened deposits.




A full range of accessories are available including interchangeable bayonet nozzles, steel brushes and cleaning tools to fit your boiler tubes.




 boiler tube cleaning systems are constructed with spring steel tape for long life. With the increasing use of waste heat boilers and the use of less highly refined fuels that do not burn as cleanly such as used crankcase oil, scale in boiler firetubes has become a common headache for maintenance personnel.




It is not uncommon for a straight brushing action to prove insufficient in removing scale from the tubes.


 A variety of more aggressive cleaning tools ranging from stiff brushes to various cutting tools, buffers and hones are available.




The rotation of the tools coupled with their aggressive cleaning action makes short work of scale removal. The flexible shaft is fed through a special dry pick-up attachment that is connected to the GTC-540 vacuum for simultaneous removal of deposits.

The best way to determine whether boiler tube maintenance is required is through regular testing of your system's efficiency.




An increase in stack temperature is a good indicator that maintenance is required.




 Efficiency Tester measures O2, CO and CO2 as well as excess air and combustion efficiency.




It provides on-the-spot data as you're making adjustments to the boiler.




Quality testing equipment can also alert you to other problems, such as dirty burners, bad drafting, fouling, flame impingements and improper firing ratios.
